and why it

Why did we establish Afghan Research Society
Multi-disciplinary research on Afghanistan has suffered much setback during the past
thirty years due to the effects of wars causing brain drain from Afghanistan and
disinterest on the part of the wider world public.
During the 1970's research efforts were beginning to flourish due to the many changes
inside Afghanistan which focused the interests of the outside world on the country, and
the intense competition between the US and the former Soviet Union. The Soviet
invasion and the following years of war interrupted these efforts. The publication of the
multidisciplinary journal called Afghanistan Journal, from Graz, Austria carrying
research articles in both Afghan and European languages ceased and so did the
Afghanistan Forum a bi-monthly publication in the US carrying news, especially on
new research in the form of abstracts of articles and PhD dissertations on
Afghanistan. There was also the Afghanistan Studies Association with annual
meetings in conjunction with the Middle East Studies Association of North America
where panels on topics of interests were presented.
The present atmosphere of international interest on Afghanistan has created another
opportunity for the revival of multidisciplinary research on Afghanistan. We see a wide
gap between what is being written and stated about many aspects of the country and
the needs and the potentials for genuine research that might fulfill these needs and
create more grounds for further research. It is for this purpose that a group of
intellectuals and professionals have decided to establish the Afghan Research Society.
We hope to have an open forum for reporting new research by the members and also
to invite others to report their research topics, and results for posting on our web site.
Details on these will follow.
